[box] i taught this workshop as a breakout session at the ETCH ministry conference in nashville, tn. below are my notes for “kids are the church of today.”[/box]

kids are the church of today, not the church of tomorrow. if we truly believe that a child is a part of the Body of Christ once they have received Jesus as Lord and Savior, why do we so often sideline them and make them wait until they are an adult to be an active part of the Church? i wish i could say i was an expert in this area, but through deep conviction and renewing of passion this past year, we made some strategic, simple changes that we are beginning to see have a big impact in our ministry to kids. in this post, we will explore ways we can be intentional about ensuring that we are preparing and purposefully helping kids be the church of today.


give them a safe place to soak up truth

  • is it a priority for all your program and events to be Gospel-centered?
  • the Gospel makes kids part of the Body of Christ, not moralism. what are you giving your kids?
  • the Word of God is alive and active, may it be your source.
    • our words don’t change lives, but His do.
    • do kids understand that the truth of God’s Word is the why and what of all you do?
  • when kids leave is it Jesus they remember?

    • i don’t want kids leaving remembering an activity. i want them to leave remembering Jesus.
    • i don’t want kids to look back and remember me. i want Jesus to be who they remember in their kid ministry years.

 

give them a safe place to seek Jesus

  • how are you allowing kids to grapple with the truth?
    • kids have questions and doubts.
    • if we don’t give them answer from God’s Word the world will give them answers.
    • is there a safe place for kids to ask the hard questions?
    • coming up in dawson kids, after our kids study the lesson on doubting thomas they will turn in questions they have about Jesus. we will do an interactive night of answers with me, the associate minister to children, and our new senior pastor.
  • allow room for the Holy Spirit
    • we often believe a successful lesson is one that completes every activity a curriculum has to offer. our God can often surprise us and take a lesson in a different direction if we will be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and His leading.
    • sometimes we shy away from the hard lessons in scripture because we are afraid or feel unequipped to teach these truths. i believe the hard lessons can challenge us to completely rely on the Holy Spirit and we will be able to have real discussion and discovery. i blogged about my favorite tough lessons to teach here: God is mean. 
  • are you being intentional to ask questions to get to the root of what they believe?
    • sometimes it is simply easier to ask the simple questions and get the “sunday school” answers and move on. but is this really helping kid sbe the church of today?
    • while we may think we are doing a great job presenting Gospel, until we follow up with a series of questions how do we really know what the truths children grasp?
  • are kids participants or observers in prayer at your church?
    • given the opportunity, kids not only can actively participate in prayer, they can be prayer leaders.
    • kids participating in prayer time might make it a bit messy or loud, but the battlefield of prayer is messy.

 

give them a safe place to serve others

  • are kids setting the example of service?
    • do kids and families in your ministry see kids actively serving?
    • with our sunday smasH greeter, we are not only teaching kids to serve and greet, we are teaching them how to converse with strangers and be ambassadors to new children and families.
  • are all your service opportunities inside the comfort zone of the kids?
    • when Jesus taught service as He washed His disciple’s feet, He wasn’t worried about making His disciples comfortable. He longed to teach them the truth.
    • if we don’t push kids outside of their comfort zone as they serve, how will they learn to rely on the Holy Spirit that lives inside them?
  • do you allow the kids to brainstorm ways to serve?
    • this generation of kids longs to serve and they are sp creative.
    • when was the last time you presented the problem and allowed kids to seek God on ways they can serve to help?

 

give them a safe place to share the Gospel

  • we want them to share the Gospel in their schools and with others, but have we ever given them a chance to practice in a safe environment.
  • Gospel God’s plan for me is a great resource to help kids understand and share the Gospel with others. 
    • i learned today that lifeway offers several videos to use to share the Gospel truth with your kids, parents, families, and leaders. check those out here.
    • when you have a child truly get it, why not use a video of them sharing the Gospel in their own words. that’s what we did with one of our sweet 5th grade girls. check out her short video below.

  • hear the Gospel from all ages
    • recently after of kids had studied the crucifixion on a sunday, we invited over 35 adults to come share in their collide tribes what the Gospel means to them. this was such a special night to see different generations come together and discuss the cross.
    • we have been studying about the Gospel quite a bit and i got this text from a mom quoting her 1st-grade daughter, ““you know i really think the Gospel is starting to stick… like it’s sticking to my heart and it’s becoming part of my brain… Ii think that’s what those collide folks are trying to get done in the first place!”
  • practice sharing the Gospel
    • in life groups on sunday morning, our investors took time to highlight the Gospel scriptures with the kids in each of their Bibles. 
    • one wednesday night after the Gospel presentation, our tribes went back to their small group rooms and kids practiced sharing the Gospel with each other. it was so neat to see them practicing peer to peer.
    • not only did our kids hear what the crucifixion meant to adults, they got to practice sharing the Gospel with these adults in a safe place, where there was grace and helpful adults. hopefully, through practice, kids will be confident to share the Gospel in their personal mission fields.

let’s just all be honest, if you have been in ministry at least a year there have been those times you have uttered aloud or silently to yourself, “i quit.” the reasons for being done in ministry can be as varied as our personalities, but the truth is the enemy doesn’t want us in the game, especially if our ministries are effective. i will confess i have said these words many times and even joke that the kids never cause me to say them, but an adult or two might. 😉 this is just one reason i couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book.

another reason i was thrilled to get a copy of “don’t quit” is because i so admire the ministry and heart of gina mcclain. there is rarely a conversation i have left with her that i wasn’t awed by her leadership skills, her passion to push to the next level, and her ability to make me think much harder and longer than i would require myself to do. gina is a rare gem of incredible competency, but totally transparency in a ministry world that often just wants you to see successes instead of the true grit it takes to stay the course. i also love how honest jessica is as she shares failures from her in-the-trenches time in ministry. so if you are not perfect and want to be encouraged not to quit, get your hands on this book.

thirdly, i am all about practical. sure i love an inspiring resource to encourage and challenge me, but when the ministry rubber meets the road i need sensible options and ideas that have been found to work in a ministry setting. jessica and gina do a great job not only giving you the “what” of not quitting, but they give you the “how” as well. almost every chapter offers hands-on practices to allow you to put in place vital check-points and evaluations.

gina’s “know your influencers” graph had me literally picturing the faces of my investors and who fits where. jessica’s PROVE process will definitely be something that sees its way into ministry decisions and discussions. but the first piece of wisdom i will put into practice are the three questions gina shares that i will ask my supervisor in our next touch base.

  1.  what are two critical outcomes you want to see from my ministry?
  2.  what’s your expectation for when these outcomes will be met?
  3. what are the non-negotiables in our ministry in terms of programming, environments, and strategy?

there are some books i read and then place on a shelf and never refer to again. this is not one of these books. i see “don’t quit” not only bringing truth to my attention, but its practices entering team meetings for years to come. that’s the key, isn’t it? not quitting and being here, for many more years.

God is mean – my latest blog at dawson kids blog

this is my latest blog post found at our dawson kids blog. 

[box] Theme intro: For the month of October, the blog will be exploring the theme ALL Scripture. All throughout scripture, there are passages that you finish and you ask yourself:”what just happened? Why in the world is that passage in scripture?” We at Dawson Kids believe that ALL scripture is God-breathed, so in each post this month, contributors have been asked to share obscure/weird/“boring”/gross passage that God has used to impact their lives.[/box]

“God is mean!” those were the words adamantly spoken to me by a young boy after i finished sharing the story of achan from joshua 7. let me refresh your memory because when i taught this lesson five years ago, it was the first time i had ever taught it to children. after the israelites destroyed jericho they were instructed by God, through joshua, to burn everything that belonged to the people of jericho except silver, gold, brass and iron. those objects were to be brought to the house of the Lord.  fast forward to their next battle with the city ai. even though God had promised the israelites the land, they were defeated badly and lost 36 men.  joshua sought the Lord and the next morning found out that achan had taken a garment, silver and gold for his tent. achan’s punishment was that he, along with all that belonged to him, were to be burned. so not only achan, but his family, and belongings were killed.

i know, i know, it isn’t the story of creation, but God included it in his Word and what an honor it was to teach it to a group of children that day. the “God is mean” statement threw me off for a second, but through the help of the Holy Spirit, we were able to turn class time into a transparent discussion about God. we talked about the love of God and how He loved us enough to send Jesus to rescue us from our sins, but we also addressed the holiness of God. a Holy God must punish sin, and achan’ sinned against the direct commands of God.

this will definitely not go down as the easiest lesson i have ever taught, but even with its gruesome ending, it may be one of my favorites. you see we had church that day in that classroom. Bible-belt, church kids drop their pretenses and asked the hard questions while seeking to understand the nature of God more. this time was not filled with the easy “Jesus love me” answers, but with the same truths found with the honest seeking of God’s Word.

i love grappling with the tough, weird, boring, and gross passages with kids (at an age-appropriate level) because they require us all to think. there aren’t always easy answers in the tragic and mundane passages, but there is truth there just the same. i believe when we skip passages because they are boring or difficult, we miss an opportunity to allow the Holy Spirit to meet us in our weakness and bring real discovery we couldn’t find on our own.

small tweak, eternal impact

each year we set aside a special sunday for our first graders to receive a Bible. i have blogged about 1st grade Bibles before here, but this year we made a small tweak/addition that had an impact i wasn’t expecting.

to involve the entire church body more in this Bible sunday (we only present the Bibles in one of our five morning services) we decided to print cards to be included in every bulletin. each card included the first name and the first letter of the last name of each child receiving a Bible that day. the back included a list of ways to pray for this child as they begin to study God’s Word for themselves. just getting these names in front of all our church members thrilled my heart, but i should have known that God had more planned than my mind could conceive.

since Bible sunday back in august i have received calls and emails from church members wanting to know if they can receive more information about their first graders. not only did they want to pray for them they wanted to write them notes of encouragement throughout the years. how grateful i am that many members are not only taking their role of prayer seriously, they want to go the extra mile to encourage their assigned child to dig into God’s Word and discover Jesus. (of course, before sharing any more information about the child, i contacted parents for their permission.)

i’m often guilty of thinking we have to create some big addition to a traditional event to take it to the next level. i was reminded through our Bible Sunday this year that a simple addition taken seriously by a praying church could have more of an eternal impact than i could ever imagine.
